Theatre
The Theatre program is a part of the Division of Humanities in the College of Arts and Sciences. Through coursework and practical experience, students will explore the areas of acting, directing, writing, production, and business in theatre. Students experience an immediate “hands-on” style of experiential learning that connects the student into the working community. They train in a variety of philosophies and techniques while creating a skillset that will serve them in building and controlling their own career path as an artist and in artistic business.

THR-101: Appreciation of Theatre
Credits 3An overview of theatre, including its history, community, cultural and personal relevance, social and political implications, production processes and literature. This course fulfills the Cultural and Global Place or the Personal Place requirement in the General Education Curriculum.
THR-110: Acting I: Basics of Acting
Credits 3This course is a study of basic acting as a performance experience. The emphasis is on the fundamentals of performance, including concentration, transition, interaction, and the structuring of action.
THR-120: Basics of Technical Theatre
Credits 3This course provides a study of the technical aspects of stage production. The emphasis will be on gaining practical experience in the use of stage and shop facilities. Additionally, it will include consideration of the physical theatre and stage, construction, painting and rigging of scenery as applied to theatrical production.
THR-152: Musical Theatre Performance I
Credits 1This course will include techniques of performance relevant to musical theater. Students will prepare scenes and songs from representative musicals. In this course students will apply knowledge of theatre elements such as movement and acting as well as musical aspects such as singing and vocal production into performance ready scenes and songs. Students will work with both theatre and music faculty. This course will cuminate in a public performance of prepared scenes and songs. Prerequisite or Corequisite: MUS 152.
THR-153: Musical Theatre Performance II
Credits 1This course is a continuation of THR 152 and include techniques of performance relevant to musical theatre. Students will prepare new scenes and songs from representative musicals. In this course students will apply knowledge of theatre elements such as movement and acting as well as musical aspects such as singing and vocal production into performance ready scenes and songs. Students will work with both theatre and music faculty. This course will culminate in a public performance of prepared scenes and songs. Prerequisite: MUS 152 and THR 152. Prerequisite or Corequisite: MUS 153.
THR-185: Theatre Practicum I
Credits 1Students participate in performance and technical production of staged works by actively contributing to a UPIKE production. Prerequisite: Permission of Instructor. This course may be repeated for up to 3 hours of credit.
THR-251: Acting II: Speaking Your Truth
Credits 3Students will explore the voice through the lens of releasing habitual tensions that impede freedom in speaking. They will develop internal and external awareness of themselves; discover the efficiency of the human body and its innate ability to produce sound; develop greater resonance and relaxation; discover a personal connection to body; breath and voice; and communicate through sound more freely and fully, thus allowing them to own and share their thoughts out loud as they strive to speak their truth. The course fulfills the Personal Place requirement in the General Education Curriculum.
THR-285: Theatre Practicum II
Credits 2Students participate in performance and technical production of staged works by actively contributing to a UPIKE production. Prerequisite: Permission of the Instructor. This course may be repeated for up to 6 hours of credit.
THR-301: Makeup & Costuming
Credits 3Students will explore the basics of costume design and makeup techniques and styles, from design to construction and application. Prerequisite: Three (3) hours of THR.
THR-302: Stage Design
Credits 3This course will introduce students to the basics of set design and construction, stage lighting skills, and sound design. Prerequisite: Three (3) hours of THR.
THR-303: Script Analysis & Research
Credits 3In this course, students learn the skills to analyze theatrical texts for all aspects of production, from acting to directing, and including basic dramaturgy.Prerequisite: Three (3) hours of THR.
THR-304: Acting III: Character Movement
Credits 3This course enables students to create character through a variety of techniques, including acting methods and techniques of theatrical movement and physical theatre. Prerequisite: THR 110.
THR-360: Theatre History
Credits 3This course is an investigation of theatrical forms from the ancient Greeks to the modern era, focusing on the most significant developments in dramatic genres, performance styles, stagecraft, architecture, and audience. Students will study dramatic texts as well as evidence of historical theatre practice in order to explore the influence of theatrical trends and culture have on performance (and vice versa). Prerequisite: ENG 112 or WRI 118. This course fulfills the Cultural and Global Place requirement in the General Education Curriculum.
THR-385: Theatre Practicum III
Credits 3Students participate in performance and technical production of staged works by actively contributing to a UPIKE production. Prerequisite: Permission of the Instructor. This course may be repeated for up to 9 hours of credit.
THR-390: Special Topics
Credits 3This upper-level course focuses on selected topics of interest in the field of Theatre. The topic may differ each time the course is offered and may be proposed by the instructor or students. This course may be taken for credit any number of times, provided a different topic is studied each time. Prerequisite: Three (3) hours of THR.
THR-410: Acting IV: Advanced Scene Work
Credits 3This is a scene-study course focused on applying and integrating the skills taught in Basics of Acting. The emphasis is placed on character analysis, research, and script analysis. The objectives include developing a rehearsal technique and understanding the process of exploration. Prerequisites: THR 110
THR-420: Stage Management
Credits 3This is an independent-study course designed to teach the various duties required of stage managers in different production situations. Student will learn organization, communication and management techniques in the areas of techincal theatre. As part of the course, student will serve as the stage manager for one or more theatrical productions. Prerequisites: THR 110, THR 120, and THR 285.
THR-465: Directing
Credits 3This is an independent-study course designed to teach the various duties required of theatrical director in different production situations. Students will learn organization, communication and directing techniques. As part of the course, students will serve as the director for one or more theatrical productions. Prerequisites: THR 110, THR 120, THR 285, and THR 303.
THR-498: Theatre Internship
Credits 1 6The course provides a supervised field placement experience for the advanced Theatre minor in a theatre or theatre-related organization. The course is open only to Theatre minors after they have fulfilled most other course requirements. Prerequisites: THR 110, THR 120 and permission of the Instructor, Advisor, Division Chair, and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. The course may be repeated once for up to 9 hours of credit. Only 3 hours may count toward the theatre minor. Offered upon request.
THR-499: Directed Study
Credits 1 6The course provides the opportunity for directed study in a specific area of Theatre not covered by existing courses in the curriculum. Prerequisites: THR 110, THR 120 and permission of the Instructor, Advisor, Division Chair, and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. The course may be repeated once for up to 6 hours of credit. Only 3 hours may count toward the theatre minor. Offered upon request.
