The activity and wellnesses courses in physical education are managed through the through the Health and Human Performance program in the College of Nursing and Human Services.

PED-103: Football Weight Training

Credits 0
A zero credit hour class to assist with scheduling weight training for members of the UPIKE football team. Provides participants with strength and endurance training. Participation is required. Prerequisite: Member of the UPIKE football team.

PED-105: Leadership and Success

This course is designed to enhance your first-year experience as a student-athlete at the University of Pikeville. You will be provided with a supportive and structured environment to assist you in making the transition to college by learning about campus resources, your role as a student, athlete, and a leader on our campus. You will be encouraged to use critical thinking skills to set goals and make responsible decisions regarding academics, major and career planning, social relationships, amd your role as an emerging leader. The course will explore the purpose of higher education and all your role within the university environment.

PED-141: Basic Ballet

An introduction to classical ballet at the beginning level. The class involves instruction in ballet technique, understanding the "how" and "why" of ballet movements, and learning about the history of ballet.

PED-142: Belly Dance Basics

Credits 1
This course is an introduction to Middle Eastern dance, also known as belly dance. Through physical instruction, discussion, reflection, and video investigation, we will examine and perform the various movements that make up belly dance. The course will be offered as a physical education course with intellectual background on belly dance throughout the world. Activities will orient students to the concepts, history, and current state of belly dancing. Class meets 75 minutes a week for 16 weeks. Bare bellies and performing in front of a group are not required. Women of all shapes and sizes are welcome!

PED-151: Self-Defense for Women

PED-174: Concepts of Fitness and Wellness

This course will cover a broad spectrum of health-related topics. Topics will cover everything from nutrition, to psychological health, physical health, environmental health and more. This is a lecture/lab course. Labs consist of assessments of physical fitness and light exercise sessions that are demonstrations of the concepts discussed during lectures. Students design and practice wellness projects (health behavior, lifestyle changes) and fitness projects (exercise/sports programs). These are assigned for out of class time, approximately two-three hours per week. This course fulfills the Personal Place requirement in the General Education Curriculum.

Introduces the student to locomotor and non-locomotor movements, folk and square dance, social dance and creative dance.

PED-185: Martial Arts & Fitness

Credits 1
This course is about exceptional training for the mind and body. Elementary martial arts will include but is not limited to self-defense, defense of others, katas, kata bunkai, pressure points, acupuncture points, acupuncture channels, joint lock, and/or joint manipulation. The fitness is from a martial arts training perspective which includes but is not limited to stretching, cardiovascular, isometric exercises, strength training, and tai chi/qi gong.

PED-241: Ballet - Beyond the Basics

The course builds on first semester class (PED 141 Ballet Basics) emphasizing learning new steps and focusing on combinations of steps. Prerequisite: PED 141 or Permission of Instructor.

PED-242: Intermediate Belly Dance

Credits 1
This course is an intermediate level investigation of Middle Eastern dance, for the student who wishes to study beyong the basics of belly dance. Through physical instructoin, discussion, relection, and video investigation, we will examine and perform the various movements that make up belly dance. The course will be offered as a physical education course with intellectual background on belly dance throughout the world. Activites will orient students to the concepts, history, and current state of belly dancing. Class meets 75 minutes a week for 16 weeks. Bare bellies and performing in front of a group are not required. Final exam will consist of developing a solo choreography to be performed for the course instructor, building on the concepts learned in the prerequisite course and synthesizing the techniques practiced in this courset. Course may be repeated for additional credit. Prerequisite: PED 142.

PED-243: Belly Dance Performance

This course is an intermediate level study of Middle Eastern dance, for the student who wishes to apply the techniques gained in the intermediate and beginning belly dance courses. The student will learn a choreography and perform it at the semester's culminating studio recital. Class meets 75 minutes a week for 16 weeks. Bare bellies and performing in front of a group are not required. Final exam will consist of participating in the performance and reflecting on that experience, building on the concepts learned in the prerequisite courses and synthesizing the techniques practiced in this course. Course may be repeated for additional credit. Both PED 242 and PED 243 cannot be taken concurrently. Prerequisite: PED 242.

PED-245: Football
