Art
The Art program is part of the Humanities Division of the College of Arts and Sciences. Through course work in creative thinking and skills this minor offers a variety of approaches which promote the role of art, aesthetics, and expressive creativity in society. The Art Minor compliments students who have chosen major areas of study across the undergraduate colleges and prepares students to use creativity and visual language in their roles as artists, communicators, educators, and business, healthcare, and community leaders.

ART-100: Art Appreciation
Credits 3A course designed to encourage an appreciation of the Visual Arts. In this course students will examine, analyze and discuss works of art from around the world, based on the visual and cultural qualities. The course will also focus on the creation of art--as an experiential event--inspired by the works studied. The class will enhance students' perceptual abilities; encourage insight and a greater understanding of the variety of visual expressions. Does not fulfill requirements toward Art minor. This course fulfills the Cultural and Global Place or the Personal Place requirement in the General Education Curriculum.
ART-102: Survey of Art from Prehistory to the 14th Century
Credits 3A general survey of art from earliest time through the precursors of the Renaissance. The class will deal with western as well as non-western art. The courses objective is to develop the ability to comprehend and evaluate concepts and issues pertaining to cultural heritage as embodied in the visual arts. Does not fulfill requirements toward ART minor. This course fulfills the Cultural and Global Place requirement in the General Education Curriculum.
ART-103: Art - 14th Century to Present
Credits 3A general survey of art from Renaissance to the present. The class will deal with western as well as non-western art. ART-121: Basic Drawing
Credits 3Introduction to basic drawing experiences and concepts. Graphic representation of objects is stressed through a variety of techniques and media. This course fulfills the Personal Place requirement in the General Education Curriculum.
ART-140: Exploring Digital Photography
Credits 3This course is designed to encourage an appreciation and facilitate the creation of images using digital photography. The main focus of the course will be the hands-on creation of digital photographic images - as creative experimentation - through the use of digital cameras and digital editing. Students will also see, examine, analyze and discuss different works of photography. The intent of the class is to enhance students' perceptual abilities; encourage insight, creativity, and a greater understanding of photography has art and visual media. This class is designed for students with no previous experience. This course fulfills Personal Place requirement in the General Education Curriculum.
ART-155: Introduction to Game Design
Credits 3This course will explore the concepts behind games, and the digital art and multimedia media needed to create them. Drawing on their cultural and personal experiences, students will learn to develop game assets in 2D and 3D, and basic visual scripting. Students will learn creative multimedia tools to develop games and gaming experiences with cutting-edge visuals. This course will enhance students' ability to work with digital art and complex software as they explore their creative voice in the 21st century. This course fulfills Personal Place requirement in the General Education Curriculum. Cross-listed with FMA 155.
ART-180: 3D Modeling and Printing
Credits 3This course will explore the fundamentals of computer-based 3D modeling and 3D printing. Using multimedia software students will develop a deeper understanding of 3D form and function. The course will also focus on entrepreneurship and how to monetize your personal of how you see the world. This course is cross-listed as FMA 180. This course fulfills Personal Place requirement in the General Education Curriculum.
ART-232: Two-Dimensional Design
Credits 3A study of principles of pictorial art structure through a series of experimental exercises in two dimensions. This course fulfills the Personal Place requirement in the General Education Curriculum.
ART-310: 2D Animation
Credits 3This course to 2D animation serves as a foundational exploration into the principles, techniques, and tools used in creating dynamic and engaging animated content. Credits 3This course is a survey of the painting, sculpture, crafts and architecture of a range of the cultures, which may include Asia, the Middle East, and/or the Pacific Island through time. The course objective is to develop a multi-cultural awareness of humanity's approaches to the visual arts and how they are a reflection of those cultures values, geographical and cultural environments, and reactions to history. There is also an acknowledgement that any culture does not exist and develop in a vacuum--while the course is intended to explore a range of Asian, Middle Eastern, and/or Pacific Island cultures, forays into influences beyond these areas may be deemed necessary. The class instructor will have discretion as to which cultures will be considered. Prerequisite: ENG 112 or WRI 118. This course fulfills the Cultural and Global Place requirement in the General Education Curriculum.
ART-316: Art of Kings, Gods and Spirits
Credits 3This course is a survey of the painting, sculpture, crafts and architecture of a range of cultures, which may include the Americas, the Middle East and/or Africa through time. The course objective is to develop a multi-cultural awareness of humanity's approaches to the visual arts and how they are a reflection of those cultures' values, geographical and cultural environments, and reactions to history. ART-317: Women in Art
Credits 3The consideration of women in art from the Renaissance through modern times. The course will consider women both in terms of women as artists as well as women as subject. By looking at the work of selected artists, the class will consider whether there is a feminine point of view, what roadblocks the women had to overcome, and the role of gender some women have committed to in their work. Prerequisite: ENG 112 or WRI 118. This course fulfills the Engaging Our World requirement in the General Education Curriculum.
ART-320: Digital Sculpting
Credits 3In this advanced course, students will delve deeper into the world of 3D sculpting, exploring the latest techniques and tools available in industry-standard software. Building upon foundational knowledge gained in previous courses, students will learn to push the boundaries of creativity and realism in their work. Pre-requisite : Sophomore Standing
ART-321: Intermediate Drawing
Credits 3A studio class designed to build on the broad basic concepts introduced in ART 121. The course objective is to develop these concepts within the context of the individual student artist. Students deal with problem-solving and analyzing both historical art and the art of their peers. Prerequisite: ART 121.
ART-332: Painting I
Credits 3A basic studio introduction to materials and methods of paiAnting with emphasis on composition. Prerequisite: ART 121.
ART-336: Advanced Game Design
Credits 3This course will center on the development of a semester long game project, where students will use industry standard tools to master the creation of assets and their integration into their games. Moreover, students will learn advanced techniques for crafting immersive in-game environments, as well as developing their skills in character design and animation. Cross-listed as FMA 336
ART-362: Exploring Sculpture & 3D Form
Credits 3A variety of materials will be used to explore the elements and principles of design as they relate to three-dimensional space, mass and volume. This course fulfills the Personal Place requirement in the General Education Curriculum.
ART-380: Creating Children's Books
Credits 3This course focuses on creating stories through written narratives and sequential pictures. Students will learn a solid foundation in the basics of visual storytelling, developing storyboards, and designing working book prototypes through hands-on assignments, illustrated lectures, discussions, and critiques. Students will explore a wide variety of picture books for inspiration, alongside a real-world introduction to the publishing profession and industry. Prerequisites: ENG 112 or WRI 118 and Sophomore standing.
ART-390: Special Topics in Art
Credits 3Study of a selected topic of special interest. The topic may differ each time the course is offered and may be proposed by either instructor or students. This course may be taken for credit any number of times, provided that a different topic is studied each time. Prerequisite: ART 121.
ART-421: Advanced Drawing
Credits 3Application of design elements and principles in developing an individual understanding personal exploration of pictorial space, organization and style. Prerequisite: ART 321.
ART-462: Sculpture I
Credits 3Introductory studio experience in principle sculptural concepts and methods. Prerequisite: ART 161.
ART-495: Senior Capstone
Credits 3Will be used to prepare for and meet the exit requirements for graduation for those majoring in art. These requirements include presenting a cohesive body of personal work, defense of said work, and an art history lecture. Prerequisite: Permission of the Instructor.
ART-498: Internship in Art
Credits 1 6This is a supervised experiential learning course for approved Art majors and minors, usually in their senior year, taken after fulfilling most other major/minor course requirements. In addition to working at the internship site, students must participate in regular meetings with the supervising instructor and complete coursework designed to enhance the experiential learning of the internship. Prerequisite: Senior Standing, Permission and Consent of the Instructor, Advisor, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and VP for Academic Affairs. May be repeated for up to a maximum of 6 credit hours.
ART-499: Directed Individual Study
Credits 1 6Individual studio projects or direted research. Open only to senior art majors or minors with all course work completed in the art area selected. Prerequisite: Permission of the Instructor, Division Chair, and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
