This course is an overview of substance misuse and substance use disorders, including an examination of the diagnostic criteria, historical and cultural perspectives, prevalence, medical use, and the biological and psychological implications related to the use of substances. The impact of substance use disorders on specific populations, mental health, and multiple societal systems will also be examined. The course also provides an overview of the theory, treatment, and intervention strategies utilized to address substance use disorders. Factors contributing to the availability of various interventions for substance use disorders, including policy, laws, and fundings, will also be addressed.
