Medical Humanities
The Medical Humanities program is part of the Division of Humanities in the College of Arts & Sciences. Students will explore the humanistic side of health, illness, and medicine from a variety of disciplines with a particular focus on the ways these are experienced by individuals, groups, and communities and the ways they engage with communal, governmental, and private systems. As a result of their studies in the Medical Humanities program, UPIKE students will:
- Develop knowledge of how medical and non-medical disciplines contribute to the study of health, illness, and care.
- Demonstrate knowledge of how the biological, psychological, sociological, spiritual, economical, and cultural perspectives impact the concept of health.
- Demonstrate knowledge of factors that impact health care delivery and health care access.
- Develop multidisciplinary communication skills (written, oral, and visual) to prepare students for professional life and/or graduate school.
- Demonstrate how the humanities facilitate the development of critical thinking and empathy for better understanding of the illness experience.
