Student Information: Taking Courses Through Acadeum
In certain situations, students may take courses through Acadeum, a network of accredited colleges and universities that share online coursework. These courses can help students stay on track for graduation when a needed class is not available at the University.
Typical situations in which Acadeum courses may be approved include:
- Transfer students who require courses that are temporarily out of rotation or unavailable during their transition into a program and must complete those courses that semester for timely graduation.
- Students on approved medical leave, or those who must temporarily be away from campus, who need continued academic progress.
- Students facing course sequencing or scheduling conflicts that would otherwise delay graduation.
- Students wishing to take classes not typically offered at the University but necessary for the completion of their program or career goals such as a foreign language.
Acadeum courses are taken for credit, appear on your transcript, and count toward your GPA, just like University courses. However, Acadeum should not be used simply for convenience or to replace courses that are already offered at the University of Pikeville.
If you believe you may need to take a course through Acadeum:
- Speak with your academic advisor. The Registrar’s Office should be able to provide further information about approved Acadeum courses.
- Go to the Registrar’s Office to receive the Acadeum Request form.
- Obtain approval from the Division Chair (if necessary) and Dean of the College where the course is housed. For instance, a business major seeking enrollment in a religion studies acadeum course must seek approval of the Humanities Division Chair and the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and NOT the Dean of the Coleman College of Business).
- The Registrar’s Office will assist with final enrollment.
