A study of the functional mechanisms that enable animals to survive, maintain homeostasis, and adapt to changing environments. Emphasis is placed on the integration of physiological processes across organizational levels, from cellular signaling and membrane transport to organ system coordination and whole-animal responses. Topics include neurophysiology, muscle physiology, and cardiovascular, respiratory, urinary, reproductive, digestive, and endocrine systems. Comparative examples highlight the diversity of physiological strategies among vertebrates and invertebrates. Laboratory exercises reinforce key concepts through hands-on experimentation and critical evaluation of physiological data. Prerequisites: A grade of “C” or better in BIO 314 or BIO 330 or permission of instructor.
